What exactly is wildlife art with soul?

From ancient images of cave paintings
illustrating the raw energy and spirit of survival of a deer hunt, to the famous parable of Noah’s Ark, to modern day cartoons like the Lion King, animals in art are all around us and have been since ancient times. Animal imagery appears to stir a basic link human beings have with the Earth and the creatures with which we share it.

Animal art with soul typically evokes a strong emotional effect and projects the true essence of the animal. It is so much more than an exercise in photo-realism – it goes deeper than a photograph, to encapsulate the very spirit of the wildlife it portrays, it can transcend any artistic style and perhaps technical ability. A beginner can produce animal art with soul equally as well as an experienced professional artist, especially when taking notice of the following five points common to the best wildlife paintings.

Living eyes.

Commonly referred to as the “windows to the soul”. They have to contain a glimpse of life and reveal a characteristic, mood or an identifiable reaction to a moment in the life of the animal subject. Take a look at the cat artwork by talented artist Kat Davies to see illuminating examples of big cat eyes in her collection of tiger, leopard and lion art.

Colour and texture.

Re-create the texture of fur as exactly as possible to recreate the sense of soft, long, short, coarse, spiky, curly, or straight hairs. Skin can be pink, black, green, blue, wrinkled or smooth, partially transparent where some light shows through, scaly and dry or moist like the rims around the eyes or the nose. Add the vital little signs of life!

An interesting background

The background can evoke drama, atmosphere and nostalgia. For examples, study the excellent works of Robert Bateman to see how evocative natural backgrounds will improve your wildlife art and bring your animal subject to life.

The lighting

Dramatic lighting gives animation to work. Imagine sunlight filtering through the mane of a lion, or the cold reflected light on the flanks of a polar bear. The cool hints of shadow and the warm tones of sunlight place your animal in the constantly changing cycle of nature from day to night, season to season and give a sense of changing climate, time and weather.

A story

A striking background will help a painting to ‘tell a story’. Quite often the viewer of the painting can dream up an ending for themselves and actively engage with the painting. See the wildlife paintings of John Seerey-Lester, especially those of his historic hunts, to see story-telling in art.

Whether painting ‘cute and furry’ animals such as cubs, kittens and puppies, the vicious or romantic wild including the Big Five, animals in the field of sport or hunting, garden birds or maybe the cherished family pet portrait, remember that memorable animal art is animal art with soul.

If you would like to see stunning examples of animal art then have a look at http://www.katdavies.com. There is an extensive collection of these and other works, and is particularly interesting if you are looking for portraits of your pet.

Like a lot of famous artists, Van Gogh loved using the color yellow. Happier times and warm feelings are given off by the color yellow. The primary color yellow has a complimentary color and that is violet. This means the two colors go extremely well together. Yellow is a beautiful color and seen in nature in the sun and wonderful cherry flowers. If you wish to brighten a room, the use of yellow or even yellow accents will bring a feeling of warmth and happiness. The same is true in your paintings.

Yellow helps to bring out feelings:

There is a spiritual and psychological meaning each viewer assigns to different colors. Yellow is one of the warm colors that create the same feelings as being in sunlight. It is a soul touching color bringing joy and warmth to people. There is no other spiritual color that brings more joy than yellow according to the scripture, it is mentioned many times. Psychologically speaking yellow is a very strong connection to sunlight which is warmth and contentment for most individuals. For others yellow reminds them of gold and therefore great riches.

Both men and women enjoy yellow:

Colors used to be assigned to certain genders but the y are not anymore now both genders enjoy the color yellow. When painting a baby nursery when expecting a child you cannot go wrong with neutral yellow. An outfit that is basically yellow is not a popular garment for women because it does not go well with most skin tones but yellow accents are always a plus and will always bring a painting to life.

In yellow paint what exactly makes it yellow?

Yellows were created from the natural colors found in the earth and from ochre. The paints of today use Cobalt, Potassium, Cadmium and other components like Copper complexes. Cadmium not only comes in light yellow but also comes in yellow. Lots of paints are available in oils especially yellows like, Hansa Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Azo Yellow Yellow Ochre and Naples Yellow just to name a few.

Making a yellow mixture:

It is always better to start mixing colors from light then gradually get darker. To bring a value to a lighter level is much harder than it is to darken a color. Secondary and triad colors are made with the use of yellow because it is a primary color. No matter what color it is mixed with it will lend an element of warmth.

To get a gold color all you have to do is use a small dot of brown. Yellow mixed with a dot of red creates a great orange and when yellow is given a dot of grey it will resemble a fruit green color. Mixing paints slowly and with small amounts is the best way to get proper colors. Oil drying paint will turn a little lighter once it has dried on the canvas.

Red is full of passion it also brings to mind heat, danger and the intense rage. Fire engine red brings a sense of danger or dark dense red feelings of passion. Heat and warmth come to mind when looking at red and green is the complimentary color to red that is why it appears directly opposite red on the color artist wheel. There is a lot of power in red and it can easily overpower your painting so using it needs to be selective.

Red, its psychology and spirituality:

Warriors and battle scenes both contain red which famous artists put into it for it fits perfectly. Red is associated with blood which is synonymous with life. The term “blood brothers” denoting the blood that flows through all of us connect us as a family of mankind.

Red is connected to blood and with it we think of pain and danger. Maybe that is the reason they chose red for the color of stop signs. Red is used in stop signs because it commands attention. The use of red in paintings is put there for that exact same reason.
The spiritual meaning of red is the creative use of intelligence or Divine Wisdom. It also stands for courage that man displays when confronted with struggle, anguish, peril and insecurity. Bravery is also linked to courage in that we face up to and overcome our fears.

So other than red being a primary color it stands out because of the many reasons we just mentioned. For displaying high emotions red is the most suitable color and an excellent choice. Paintings pop out because of the amazing impact that red achieves through the use of red accents. Red helps to entertain paintings with green landscapes as it brings excitement and life to it. {To help green pastures and fields pop out a little bit of red flowers can be added to make the painting more interesting.}

Techniques for mixing red:

Extreme care must be taken when mixing red with other colors and that is because it is such a dominant color. Care must be taken when mixing your colors, in order to find that perfect color you are looking to use you must mix tiny amounts at a time. It takes just a dot of paint to change the value quickly. The complimentary color of red is green and when added to red it makes darker shades. Equal parts of red to green will create the color of mud. If you add too much green, you can add some more red to lighten the value. Burgundy is a very popular color and also one that is very hard to make. Cadmium is a basic red and that is used to create burgundy. Mix this with a pure black and ultramarine blue.

Grab your pallet and place a bit of red, black and blue onto it. Concerning the colors that amounts will coincide with five parts of red paint, one and a quarter parts blue and just a quarter part black. Using your pallet knife you can scoop a little of the blue and mix with the red and then very sparingly add some black until the mixture reaches the deep rich burgundy that you want.

Although orange is not a primary color it is a very dominant secondary color which is very complementary with the color blue. The other secondary colors that also dominate are purple and green. Mixing red and yellow will give you the color orange. The use of both of these warm colors helps to bring power and movement to every painting. Orange is powerfully warm and inspiring when put in a painting and it owes its power to its parent colors, red and yellow. Frederic Leighton the great famous artist used orange in ways that could only leave other artists envious of how he did it. Fruit is not the only thing that orange can be used for in paintings.

The Spirituality of the color Orange and its psychology:

There is no doubt that orange brings a dominant force with it being the product of the two primary colors red and yellow. Orange is so appealing and comfortable to look at when used in fine art. If the desired effect of your painting is one of peace and tranquility then using orange is not the best idea. Bright orange is extremely distracting and normal orange very energetic when viewed.
Flames are usually depicted by the use of orange as well as being an excellent color for representing the sun in your landscapes. Orange is an excellent way to create the sun-tanned effect when painting figures lying on the beach sunbathing. Flowers and fruits painted in different types of orange are extraordinarily realistic but the use of pure orange does not work at all. The fruit orange was where the color orange got its name from.
Spiritually speaking orange is about being cooperative and being able to arbitrate in situations so the more muted versions of orange will give the viewer a sense of patience or persistence. Orange has nothing but strong meanings attached to it. You need not look further than salmon, gold and peach to see that orange has so many strong values. So then, pure orange may be considered brash and bold while other shades bring about a quiet endurance. Orange is an interesting color and brings a lot to any painting.

The pigments that create orange:

Azo and Copper are used in the making of orange but the most popular pigment used is Cadmium. Iron Oxide, earth pigments and Ochre are used to make the more subtle of the orange colors. You can purchase orange paint to use right from the tube by buying Cadmium Orange but usually Cadmium Yellow is the base for creating very exciting variations of orange.

Giving the color orange a mix:

As has been stated, mixing yellow and red will make orange. By adding more yellow your orange will lean more towards a yellowish orange color and by adding more red your orange color will be more reddish. Darker oranges are that way because they contain more red and lighter oranges have more yellow in them. Adding slow small amounts of white and tan to the orange color can help you to eventually get a salmon or peach color according to artists. Patient shades of orange will take a little patience to finally get.

In this day and age of a bad economy most people are cutting back on expenses. One of the biggest things they try not to do is home improvements.

In a great economy, home improvements are all over. Contractors are backed up with work and happy. But when the economy gets bad, you can see it in the contracting business.

But I would like to mention that when you paint your house in this economy, it is actually a great use of your money. I should know living in San Diego where you can definitely feel the housing slump, painting San Diego houses definitely helps.

Let’s consider some reasons why. Two things to think about are if you are selling your house or if you are keeping your house.

If you do plan to sell, having your house painted is actually a wise economic move. With the housing bubble crash and falling home values most homes do not sell fast. The ones that do sell are the ones that look the best. Buyers are picky and they wait for what they want.

Well if you invest in hiring a painter, this will actually not only improve the value of your home it also makes it look better. A house that looks clean and beautiful will obviously sell much faster than a house that you didn’t improve.

So by hiring a professional painter to paint your house inside and out, that expense is really a good investment.

Now if you don’t have any plans on selling, what are the benefits of painting? Homeowners always want a nice house to live in. In a bad economy with less spendable cash, painting is often a reasonably inexpensive home improvement
I have seen this first hand as a painter San Diego.

A brand new coat of paint turns your old house into a house that looks like new. Do it for inside your house as well as outside and you create a great place to live.

When you are not able to spend on a room addition, painting is an option you can afford.

When a remodel of the kitchen or bathroom is not affordable, a fresh coat of paint makes that room look like new.

In these uncertain times economically, a lot of times you are unable to do the things you want to with your home. Hiring painters San Diego contractors gives you that flexibility to still improve your home with little costs.
