I know collectors collect lots of things. Some collectors collect stamps, some people collect coins and some collect sports cards. There’s something unique about collecting vintage model trains though. When you collect something that actually still does what it is supposed to in real life it is different than when you take that thing out of real life. A person can actually interact with these collector’s items. The locomotives still can be caused to serve their function in real life. Try doing that with your stamp collection!

What are the popular collectible locomotives currently? Well, there are many kinds but here are some of the most popular and fascinating:

Lionel [train|locomotive]s:

First of all there are Lionel trains. If you collected one of these vintage toy locomotives from every decade in the last century you could put together a pretty good history of toy training. When you collect a Lionel locomotive you are collecting model locomotive royalty. Baby boomers will recall the Lionel Christmas displays they saw as children. Lionel still has a aura that most model train manufacturers would kill for. Famous folks like the rocker Neil Young and the actor Tom Hanks have been long time Lionel fans. These locomotives are such favorite items because many grown ups recall them from their childhoods when Lionel displays were often set up in hardware stores. Because Lionel was dominated in the 1950s and because the post War period was the high moment of model hobbying, it is no wonder that Lionel should be as prestigious as the brand is.. Lionel’s value is augmented by the fact that it priced itself out of range for most customers back in the post war era, creating a scarcity that helps bouy its value even today.

American Flyers:

The only toy train brand that can really give Lionel a run for its money is American Flyer. A. C. Gilbert’s attempt to take the Chicago company and make it a competitor of the juggernaut Lionel ultimately failed. Many collectors will absolutely swear by the quality of these trains. The uniqueness of s gauge adds to the uniqueness of the American Flyer brand. They are so popular among collectors and fans that Lionel LLC, the current owner of the American Flyer patent, plans on releasing many of the most popular locomotives from this time period. Watch out for them.

Ives:

If you really want to find a train nobody but the true collector has, go for an Ives train. Just prior to World War II it was an Ives, American Flyer, Lionel three way battle for dominance. Ives did not survive but if you are lucky you might be able to locate one of their vintage locomotives. Like Lionel, Ives operates on O scale.

Clock operated [train|locomotive]s of the Victorian era:

If you really want to go old school you can’t go older than a 19th century clock operated locomotive. They don’t have the complicated detail that the Lionel and American Flyers would have after World War I. During this era in toy training the toy train market was overrun by German imports. This would persist until World War I when a sense of jingoism pushed potential buyers away from these foreign toys. You can really make out the hand crafting on these simple wooden trains. No plugs, no batteries, no electricity—these are wind-up locomotives in the truest sense. And they were pricey back then. They clearly had the children of the rich in mind. Most before World War I were German. These locomotives were part of the German obsession with childhood, and came to us along with kindergarten. Both were part of Germany’s obsessions with childrearing in the early 20th century.

There is great enjoyment in restoring one of these old toy trains. There are certainly worse pursuits to spend your time on.

Think quick: what are the three most widely recognized American miniature trains manufacturers? I bet you’ll remember them when I tell you. The answer is: “Lionel, American Flyer and Bachmann Trains”. You may not have known that Bachmann was American, but it is. And American Flyer was a creator not just a line of trains. Here’s the facts:

Lionel Trains:

Until the fifties Lionel was the front runner in the model training world. Lionel’s great marketing allowed it to outwit the competition. It was Lionel’s marketing campaign that placed model train tracks around Christmas trees. Their O [scale|gauge] trains which were one 48th the size of [regular|real world|actual] [trains|locomotives] ruled the roast up until the 1950’s when HO scale trains started to take over the market. Starting in the 60’s Lionel went through several ups in downs but is still around. Lionel O gauge is back and as hot as ever. Their great trains are well loved by all.

American Flyer:

We mostly recognize American Flyer trains as a line of trains now, but they were their own manufacturer until 1966 when they were bought out by Lionel. American Flyer originated in Chicago around 1900. They were bought out by A C Gilbert who also popularized the famous “erector sets” of the early 20thcentury. American Flyer is partly still so popular as a collectible today because it offered such a strong alternative to Lionel’s O gauge trains. Like Lionel these trains were produced largely in O scale until after World War II when they attempted to establish an S gauge train line that ultimately failed but that has remained American Flyer’s most popular trains. When Lionel bought American Flyer in 1966, they kept and refurbished much of the equipment. In the last ten years Lionel has started reissuing the most famous and popular of the American Flyer trains using the original manufacturing devices but updating the trains with new sound systems and 21st century quality controls.

Bachmann Industries:

This is actually the oldest of the three companies, founded way back in the 1830s but was the last of the three to enter the toy train business. Descendants of the original founders of the company, the Carlisle’s and the Bachmann’s, are still on the company board, though the company is now headquartered in China, not in Philadelphia. Bachmann rose up after WWII by marketing starter kits to a middle class audience. To this day Bachmann remains the leader in HO scale.

We now have more choices than ever before when it comes to the model train hobby. The Internet has opened whole new choices for model train hobbyists. You can choose from almost any scale and from any period of train at just the touch of button. The three American classics I have been discussing are really American treasures.

We love O model railroads and trains, there’s just no arguing with that? You can pick up the trains and really take a look at them. You need two hands to hold it even as an adult. You also can really see the detail. This is not one of those small little locomotives you need to go get your microscope for. Don’t worry mom, your baby is not going to choke on any of the parts of this train. Why do O trains just seem to come at us from some place deep in ourselves? Here’s why:

These are the trains of your childhood:

If you’re of a certain age these are the model trains you first noticed. They’re the toy trains from the Christmas displays you remember as a boy. Many of us placed these trains on our holiday lists in the hope that we might wake up to their whistle on Christmas morning. And they’re also likely to be the model trains that you didn’t get because they were too expensive. For this reason they are also the trains that remained forever in the realm of the wished for. Now that you have become a hobbyist again, they are the trains that are most likely to scratch that long festering itch.

Lionel:

The name Lionel probably rings a bell for you, even if you don’t recall why. Lionel is probably the archetypal model train making company in the United States. Lionel has been around for so long that you can trace the history of toy training by following their circuitous course through the volatility of the hobby world. The reason why you associate toy locomotives with Christmas is because of an advertising campaign pursued by Lionel in the 1930’s. It was these strategies that made them the top dogs of the model training world in the early 1900’s. It was mainly because Lionel started to corner themselves at the higher strata of the market that they opened themselves up to usurpers. By the Vietnam era when model training was at an all time low in terms of American participation, Lionel’s bargain based, tinier sized challengers pushed it out of business. But Lionel has been resurrected as Lionel LLC and, though still plagued by financial problems, continues to be one of the leading model locomotive makers around. The Lionel brand still retains a certain allure that other well established train makers like Bachmann don’t.

O gauge is just a neat size to work with:

Even though O gauge demands a lot more room than HO or N, its size also adds a great number of benefits. O scale locomotives are a lot larger than HO scale locomotives. Real world locomotives are 48 times bigger than O scale model locomotives. It is a train that is easy to pigment, decal and weather. You don’t require incredibly fine motor skills so even the clumsiest of children or most palsied of old folks can work with these trains. Take it from me, even when I’ve had one too many lattés and my fingers are trembling like leaves in a storm I still have no difficulties with these trains. Also, because of its size, you can really take in the little aspects of these locomotives. You can really individualize your toy training experience with O scale since everything is on a gauge that you could do them from scratch. There is just a lot more that you can do with an O gauge toy railroad.

O scale is also a favorite for model train fans:

Fan’s of toy locomotives just love O because of its association with Lionel trains. Classic Lionel locomotives of bygone eras often fetch high prices on e-bay and many model locomotive enthusiasts like to collect Lionel trains from different decades so that they can have a sort of living record of the evolution of toy trains.

Even if this were a brand new scale with no following, it would soon attract trainers solely because it just feels like the perfect dimensions for a hobby train. It does take up more area than other smaller types of trains, but this sacrifice seems well worth it for most of us. Given Lionel’s long track record it is unlikely that this gauge of locomotive will go out of production soon. Even if it did, the extensive tradition of Lionel will keep O gauge lovers stocked up for a good deal of time to come. Just ask the rocker Neal Young who loved O gauge locomotives so greatly that he was at one point part owner in Lionel and is still retained as an consultant to the company!

From their creation in the early 1900s to the current day, Lionel model trains have continued to keep up with the times. Though keeping true to its original design consisting of working lights, sounds and even smoke, these trains continue to improve with the progression of the real trains that we see today. With the Towercom audio feature, your train set will come to life with an automated voice calling out instructions such as “you’re clear for departure” as well as the specific information associated with whichever locomotive is presently on your track! The smoke feature has been improved so that the timing of the smoke puffs is synced with the rpm of the drivers! When Lionel model trains first were introduced people were amazed by their realism, and contemporary models are no exception. And being that Lionel trains are acquirable in all sizes, you will always find exactly what you’re looking for. With the current technology available today for building model trains, there are no boundaries to the amount of authenticity that can be crafted into these toy replicas.

Be sure your child is old enough to control a Lionel model train before deciding to buy one. Operation by children younger than five years of age is not encouraged, and kids older than five should always have constant adult companionship when they are operating a train. Presenting your children to the fantastic world of model trains from an early age can lead to a cherished life-long hobby. The possibilities for growth of these model train sets are so great, that adding on to your set could be an ongoing continuous work in progress. There are new editions of trains, models and new options being created all the time for your delight.

If you are a serious model train collector, or you want to get your child interested in the hobby with a beginning train set, Lionel Model trains lead all of the rest and should be looked at first.

Lionel has been a leader in the creation of model trains and model train sets since the company was founded in 1900. Rescued from the brink of bankruptcy and disappearance, today Lionel LLC has brought back quality and innovation in it’s modern line of Lionel model trains. It’s good to see that an American icon that is a part of many of our childhood memories is able to not only survive now but thrive.

With a new outlook and a new corporate structure, Lionel is able to do well in the modern world of tomorrow while keeping that which we know and love about the Lionel model trains of yesteryear and creating high quality products with tradition and innovation that all can enjoy and appreciate. Though not as popular compared to the golden age of the late 1940s and early 1950s, model trains haven’t gone anywhere and are even enjoying renewed interest. Children today have many more options when it comes to toys including electronic toys like video games that playing with a train set isn’t what it once was in terms of popularity.

Most of us can think back to the day when we were children and Lionel model trains were very much a part of our childhood. Remembering the huge box and the bright gift wrapping of your first train set is a great memory for many people. The love for model train along with the pleasant childhood memories of them remains with many of us into adulthood. As an adult with more money than our childhood allowances, we are enabled to realize many of our childhood model train dreams.

After evolving along a rich timeline and history, the modern Lionel model train company is not alone to enjoy the complete market dominance it once held, there are quite a few other mode railroad manufacturers that have garnered a piece of the model trains niche. Companies like MTH are really upping the ante with their hyper realistic locomotives and sound effects. It’s great that Lionel is facing this new and heightened competition since it has pushed Lionel forward in a good way. In any case, even with new competition and other manufacturers on the model train scene, model railroaders of all kinds appreciate the history and contributions, past, present and future of Lionel model trains.

The founder of Lionel trains, was born in 1877 to a Jewish immigrant family. His name was Joshua Lionel Cowen. It was just after the Civil War that Lionel Cowen immigrated with his family, settling in New York. Cowen and his family emigrated to America with the backdrop of great world change, particularly the industrial revolution. Edison had just created the electric light and trains signaled the progress of change. The rapid expansion westward in America, enabled by the joining of the Central and Union Pacific railroad lines marked an exciting time for some that was potent with new possibilities and dreams. Given the context of his formative years during the westward expansion and the industrial revolution, it’s quite fitting that Cowen would grow up to build and invent. He is credited with inventing the flashlight and just before the turn of the century, this college drop-out received his first patent for an instrument that was used to light the flash of a camera.

It is said that before the age of ten, he made his first working toy train. One of his earliest creations was a small actual working steam engine carved out of wood. This early steam locomotive experiment unfortunately exploded, damaging his parents kitchen Despite this exploding mishap, Cowen was undeterred and eventually founded the Lionel Corporation around the turn of the century. By this time, passenger travel was at a height and many saw it as classy and sophisticated. The then modern technology enchanted adults and children alike.

It’s sort of ironic that the first working toy train by what would soon become Lionel Trains was not a toy at all, it was a specialty store window display prop, designed to showcase featured merchandise. In it’s task of featuring store items, the flat electric express gondola wasn’t very successful however, it succeed in a then unexpected way. It failed to highlight featured items in the gondola, this was because it succeeded in creating so much interest that customers would want to buy the fascinating new electric train. Lionel Cowen made a smart decision after seeing this and brought Lionel Corporation around to focus on model trains that remain popular to this day.
