Candles are wonderful things, and even though we now really only use them for decoration or for creating a specific mood, they once kept society going after dark. We see the lighting value of the candle if there is a power-out: though it takes some getting used to, candle light can provide enough light to go about our business without needing to use electricity. In fact from the time it was invented about three millennia before Christ to the end of the Eighteenth Century it was a key lighting source in any home after sunset.

Candles are not hard to make, and they are generally cheap to buy. What’s more they last for ages, and many are beautifully scented. In this article we will take a quick look at how candles work and how to make them, so you can decide if you think the home made approach is best.

The candle is a fairly simple structure. The source of fuel is the solidified wax and this wax can be derived from a number of different sources – paraffin (crude oil), palm wax or beeswax for example. Crucial to the design of the candle is the wick, the string that goes through its center. Wax itself is hard to light and it does not readily burn. Wicks are covered with wax and they are the means for the wax to be turned from solid into gas that burns. As candles generate heat they can also be used to maintain the warmth of dishes prior to serving. However, using candles to cook by could be frustrating!

Candle making needs some consumables – wax and wicks, mainly – and some basic reusable materials – a mold and a pouring and measuring jug made from metal. Additional equipment you can improvise from things around the home. Like the double boiler – all this is a pan with boiling water into which you place the metal jug. Usually a piece of metal is placed in the bottom – something like a cake ring – so the jug sits on that and does not touch the metal of the pan. By keeping the jug only in contact with the water it is easy to control the temperature for ease of use and for safety.

You secure the prepared wicks in the candle mold, then carefully fill with the liquefied wax. As this wax re-solidifies it shrinks. The remedy is one further pour that helps straighten the finished candle. And there you have your hand crafted candle. Colors can be changed or mixed and you can mix up some scents to add. The advanced candle maker can create their own unique designs. Exploring your creative side is the most enjoyable aspect of home candle making. This is not really a hobby that will save you lots of money since commercial candles are well priced. Supplies are easy to obtain from one of the many great internet supply stores. You will also find inspiration from the great ideas on enthusiastic internet sites.

As hobbies go, making candles is fairly simple and it can be fun to look at your creations when you use them. Moreover, you will be doing something that has five thousand years of history behind it. Alternatively, if you think that candle making is not for you, there are lots of great candles to be bought over the Internet or in stores around town. They will be a bit more expensive, but will be perfect.

The warm illuminating glow it emits. That wonderfully sweet scent as your candle dims. Sigh! Few people are aware of how fun creating beeswax candles can be!

The art of beeswax candlemaking is a wonderful DIY project for your children. Since there is no melting of wax, the kids do not need to be near a hot stove. Creating beeswax candles is a nifty project for kids because it doesn’t leave a mess and the materials are easily sourced.

Making Beeswax Candles Tips - Items that You Do Need

8 inch by 16 inch sheets of beeswax

Primed wick sliced for a one inch candle

A small paring knife from your kitchen

Flat open surface

How to Make Beeswax Candles

Lay out your sheet of beeswax

Slice wick approximately 3/4 inches longer than wax sheet (allowing excess on both sides of candle)

Leaving available wick at each ends allows you the choice to decide which side of the candle you prefer as the top and which side the bottom.

Lay the wick on the tip of the sheet and then, after folding it on top of 1/8 of an inch of wax, proceed with rolling. The wick would be safely enclosed when you use the seam. Pushing firmly from left to right continue to roll the beeswax forward around the wick with your fingertips, making sure the beeswax is wrapped tight and straight as you go. This is probably the most difficult step thorughout the process of making candles.

Another thing you can do is use either a cutting board or counter corner as you create a seam (1/8 inches) by flipping the wax overthen folding it down. Whether you go with the first or the latter, do be sure your efforts produce a textbook-quality seam.

Candle thickness is something you need to consider when you’re making your candle. The thicker you want, the more beeswax you will need to add. This is done by placing the extra sheet of wax edge to edge with the original & using your fingers to gently meld the pieces together. Rolling beeswax into a straight line can be tricky so make sure you only stop when it’s wrapped around itself completely.

With your thumbs, press the corners of the beeswax down softly upon reaching the end. Continue going along the whole length of the candle creating an invisible seam.

Select what could be the ideal part to serve as the candle’s top then shave the wick 1/2 inches from the wax. Don’t forget to remove the remaining wick from the bottom.

Even if the children don’t understand the true pleasurable part, you do. Now, get on and set your candle alight to celebrate your wonderful project and let the intoxicating scent of success wash over you! And as for your little ones? And voila — their very own candles!

Be aware that the next steps for candlemaking are not much different with what others in your place had done centuries ago. In the beginning the purpose was to create light…a critical requirement in those instances. These days though majority of its enthusiasts view making beeswax candles as a leisure. Or it can be for a variety of reasons. As cited earlier on, a lot of people look upon this project as a recreational pursuit. Sometimes however, it is for giving as a gift on special occasions. A craft project like wax candle making is considered kid-friendly by most parents. Finally, the last reason is profit. There are those who learn candle making in hopes of making money from it.

The warm illuminating glow it emits. That sweet and pleasant smell as the candle glimmers. Sigh! Making beeswax candles is truly a “ton” of fun!

Making beeswax candles is a great “hands on” project for the kids. Don’t worry about kids having to get within one foot of a hot stove because this project doesn’t involve any burning wax. Beeswax candle making is a neat and tidy project with easy-to-find materials.

Making Beeswax Candles Tips - Items that You Do Need

8 inch by 16 inch sheets of beeswax

Primed wick sliced for a one inch candle

A small paring knife from your kitchen

Flat open surface

Learn to Make Beeswax Candles

Lay out your sheet of beeswax

Slice wick approximately 3/4 inches longer than wax sheet (allowing excess on both sides of candle)

Leaving available wick at each ends allows you the choice to decide which side of the candle you prefer as the top and which side the bottom.

Lay wick on edge of sheet and begin to start rolling beeswax by folding over 1/8 inch of wax. You can ensure that the wick would be properly enclosed by the seam. While rolling the wax forward and having it circle the wick tightly with your finger tips, remember to push it from one side to another. This is arguably the hardest part in the entire process of beeswax candlemaking.

Another option would be flipping the wax then folding it down to form a seam—about 1/8 inches—with a counter corner or perhaps a cutting board. Either or – just make sure you obtain a perfect seam in the process.

Candle thickness is something you need to consider when you’re making your candle. To increase the candle’s thickness, use more beeswax. Do this by placing the additional wax sheet edge to edge with the original, melding the pieces together with your thumb. When rolling the beeswax, make sure you do so in a straight line and continue until the very end.

When you get to the end, gently push the edges of the beeswax down with your thumbs. As you continue working on other parts of the candle, imagine making a seam as you go.

Determine which part would work well as top for your candle then slash half an inch off the wick above the beeswax. Do not forget to start from the bottom as you remove the rest of the wick.

Your kids might not appreciate the finer parts of this project but you would. So go ahead, ceremoniously light your glorious achievement, inhale the exotic perfume and enjoy this splendid moment! And as for the kids? And there it is — candles that your kids made by themselves!

And while you are learning to make wax candles keep in mind that the makings of candles have been here for centuries. In the beginning the purpose was to create light…a critical requirement in those instances. But at present, a lot of people simply take up candlemaking for recreational purposes. There could be a number of other reasons for it. As mentioned above, this activity is often taken up for personal purposes. Sometimes however, it is for giving as a gift on special occasions. A lot of parents consider craft projects, such as making wax candles, ideal for their kids. Lastly, there’s the money-making potential to consider. There are also people who make candles for a living.

Lots of people all over the world are learning how to make candles. There are all kinds of options from pillars to dipped tapers to votives, and all sorts of colors and scents. Choose from traditional paraffin, beeswax, or exotic waxes such as soy. Anyone can make a candle!

You can create small scented candles, practical candles for light, or decorative candles that work as a beautiful centerpiece. No matter what you do, remember that mistakes are never permanent. If you don’t like the finished result when you produce your candles, just melt them down and try again. That makes candle making one of the most forgiving hobbies out there.

You can choose to purchase a candle making kit for your first candles, try the craft store for some basic supplies purchased separately, or order from a specialty candle making store online. Each method has its benefits and downsides.

For instance, kits come with everything you need to make a candle, but the components are pre-picked for you, so this can be pretty limiting. You can choose to buy locally, but selection can be problematic, or you can buy online from a store that specializes in candle making supplies. However, you can’t see what you’re getting before it arrives, which means you’ll have to know what you want before you order – returns can be difficult.

It doesn’t matter how you decide to get your candles – the supplies are pretty minimal. Everyone who’s going to make a candle will require wax, some candle wicks and a way to melt it that’s not dangerous, as well as a way to protect their work surfaces and any surrounding areas from getting wax dripped onto them.

You’ll also need molds for candles like votives and pillars, and jars for soft waxes that never become quite solid. If you want to do things the old fashioned way and use a dipped candle, make sure you have something to dip into that’s deep enough, a place to hang finished candles for cooling, and something to suspend wicking from. All candle makers will also need a thermometer.

Avoid candle making around children and pets, and make sure that you wear clothing that will cover your body well and won’t catch on anything. This will cut down on the danger of spills and the resulting burns. Wax is pretty hot, after all, unless you’re using low temperature specialty waxes.

Coloring and adding candle fragrance is very popular, as well. These chemical perfumes and dyes are mostly non-toxic, though you shouldn’t ingest them, and they can stain. That means you should handle them with a little bit of caution and make sure melted wax is added slowly to keep mottling from being a problem.

That’s really all you need when it comes to basic candle making, and the supplies can be pretty inexpensive. A few old candle stubs, some wick, and a jar can help you make your first practice candles. Once you get used to doing it, you can work with multiple colors, mix your own shades, and work in more creativity.
