Wax is the main material of your hand made candles. If you want to protect the quality of the hand made candles, decide on the wax type that is suited for your candle making needs. You can categorize the waxes you are going to utilize according to ease of use, grade and aroma.

Needless to say, your choice of wax is extremely important because mistakes can affect the profitability of your hand made candles and your reputation as a candle maker in general. If you are a beginner you can start by making use of paraffin-type hand crafted candles. These paraffin waxes are different from the other varieties of wax because of the low cost and high availability.

If you notice, the hand crafted candles you buy in bulk for common uses are made of paraffin-type wax. This crude material is inexpensive which means you can drastically lower the price tag of your candles lower than your competition’s. What are the unique qualities of paraffin candles?

Most beginner candle makers use paraffin wax for practice. Processed petroleum oil has many byproducts and one of these is paraffin. Because the crude oil goes through a process of purification, there are many paraffin wax kinds or grades that are produced.

You must know about the various grades of paraffin, and these may also vary when it comes to expense and candle wax quality. Paraffin grades are different from each other in terms of melting points and consistency when melted.

One necessary strategy to obtain the most excellent paraffin unadulterated material is to ask the seller or shop owner about the differences of paraffin wax grades. In particular, ask for the melting point of the paraffin-type wax you’re buying.

The melting point of this type is lower than 130 degrees Fahrenheit. Due to the pliable nature of this paraffin wax type, it’s the ideal type to use for container candle creation. There are few candle entrepreneurs who won’t use this type of paraffin because of its mushiness.

The next sort of paraffin changes rapidly from solid to liquid, with a melting point of 130 up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Again, this sort of paraffin is ideal for making container candles because of its flexibility and texture.

Now, there is a type of paraffin wax that is perfect for creating molded and carved homemade candles. Because the melting point of this last kind of paraffin is high, approximately 145 up to 150 degrees Fahrenheit, the resulting wax candle is tougher than the other kinds.

These hard paraffin-type candles are the ones that get sold for mass consumption, religious practices and common uses. You want this type of candle to be nearby if there is a storm and if you need a candle that will last for a long time.

Be aware of the following measures when using paraffin for candle creation in your kitchen Too hot temperature can injure the candle maker so you should make sure to use thick clothes and temperature resistant tools. Most candle creation kits meant for house purposes have these materials, but you’re going to need to check carefully.

You must never forget that you might get scorched if you’re not careful with handling paraffin wax. Which means you need mittens, safety goggles, a sturdy apron and hair cover.

Beeswax candles are popular on a global scale because of their golden color and the soft honey fragrance they give off when lit. Decorative candles made of beeswax are also said to be more relaxing than paraffin candles. Beeswax candles are easy to make. Read on to find out how effortless it is to create bee’s wax candles.

If you plan on making candles out of this type of natural wax, you should know some crucial facts about this candle crafting component. Apis mellifera bees manufacture an extremely sticky raw ingredient called bee’s wax. Enterprising bee keepers sell raw beeswax harvested from hives in hobby stores.

If you have previous relationships with beekeepers, you can buy the unadulterated ingredient at wholesale from these suppliers. Remember that you have to patiently await the next batch of bee’s wax that the bees produce before buying again. The Apis workers and their queen are still spinning your beeswax raw ingredient so wait a while longer!

Bee’s wax is readily on hand, just go to specialized stores near honey producers.

However, we can’t help but feel whimsical thinking of how hard these bees work to create our beeswax! Candles created out of bee’s wax burn cleanly and are safe for home use. Some candles sputter or flicker when lit, making them risky for young ones to handle. These bee’s wax candles are so safe you can let kids handle them without worry. Beeswax candles are utilized to set the vibe without anxiously looking at your ceiling for dark spots.

Because the raw ingredient for bee’s wax candles was created in a place where honey is being manufactured by Apis bees, the resulting fragrance of bee’s wax candles is naturally sweet and relaxing.

Apis bees create bee’s wax in the same beehive they manufacture honey so the scent of the honey is transfered to the beeswax. Fragrant candles are bought by romantic people looking for more artistic ways to spruce up their home.

Some people order bee’s wax candles to rejuvenate their senses, and so should you. These are sold in most craft stores in rectangular sheets or square pieces. If you’re a newbie at candle making you can start with a couple of sheets before you purchase more.

A crucial part of the whole procedure is coating the wick with the wax itself. We call this priming the candle wick. The wick of beeswax candles can only be installed after soaking in pure beeswax for at least 6 minutes. Cool the coated wicks on wax paper while you prepare your beeswax sheet for rolling.

After the wicks have cooled, the next step is to install them on one side of the wax sheet before you can roll the wax.

If you’ve ever appreciated the site of tapered candles on display, you will love making tapered beeswax candles. Just cut the beeswax sheets in small triangles prior to rolling. Tapered candles are usually put on display during a formal dinner, a social gathering and religious rituals. This means you can promote to a high end target market and demand premium prices.

You can utilize rectangular or square sheets for creating regular shapes. Crafting beeswax candles is like preparing dough for biscuit baking. The procedure of rolling tightly is similar. Your dough flattening skills will come in handy when rolling the sheets.

Owing to the increase in popularity of candle making, candle making wax has become far better, more available and with a lot more variety than before. People are constantly looking for the new thing and since wax is the main component in candle making, the changes have been there.

Petroleum byproducts like paraffin wax are used for deriving candle making wax. Paraffin wax is readily available and inexpensive. Natural waxes are refined from plant materials like soy, palm, bayberry and vegetables.

A natural candle making wax growing in popularity is soy based wax. Hydrogenation of soybeans are done to make them suitable for candles. Soy wax is a renewable resource that is eco-friendly. The states of Illinois, Iowa and Indiana in the United States are the major producers of soybeans and hence, it is a positive aspect.

Another renewable resource for candle making wax and a byproduct of nature is palm wax. Unfortunately with the growing popularity of palm wax, countries like Indonesia and Malaysia are clearing out vast areas of rainforest in order to plant palm plantations. This is devastating to ecosystems and compromises the populations of endangered animals like orangutans, rhinoceroses and the Sumatran tiger.

Thankfully, the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) stepped in and founded RSPO. Developing and defining sustainable palm cultivation is the major objective of this organization. They also help member organizations to implement and verify the procedures. So when you are shopping for palm candle making wax make sure that they are obtaining the wax in an eco-friendly way.

Some candles are made from animal based materials like beeswax. Candles made from beeswax, palm, and bayberry were offered by companies in the past. Recently there has been a new and growing interest in making candles out of these natural products. Beeswax is one of the more popular natural candle making waxes. It is offered in white and yellow. Because of its flavor, burning characteristics and rigidity, candle makers are finding it more attractive, although it can be expensive.

A new way of making candles are gel candles. There are three different densities in which gel candle making wax available. The amount of fragrance to be used and the type of the candle decides the density of the gel.

Low density gel wax is best for candles with a 0-3% fragrance load. Even at a lower temperature, the low density wax can be used. The medium density gel wax works well with candles that have a 3-5% fragrance load. It is probably the most popular gel candle making wax to work with. High density gel wax is better for candles with a heavier fragrance load.

Candle makers have plenty of different choices for candle making wax. The candle maker would get double, triple or even quadruple the fulfillment out of the candle making, if they are able to understand the nature of each kind of wax.

If you’re going to make candles, obviously you’re going to need wax. But that isn’t as simple as many beginners think – there are a lot of choices to choose from. This article is a short list of the different types of candle making wax available.

Paraffin Candle Wax

Paraffin is the most commonly used wax, both in commercial production and by the home hobbyist.

Paraffin is a byproduct of petroleum refinement. It’s what’s left when crude oil is refined.

Different grades of paraffin candle wax are available. Most suppliers indicate which is their “general purpose” candle wax and that’s usually a good one for beginners to start with. The wax is widely available, relatively inexpensive, very stiff at room temperature, holds dyes and scents well and burns relatively cleanly.

Soy Candle Wax

Soy candle wax is a recent invention. It was developed in the 1990’s as part of the search for a natural candle wax. Soybean oil is liquid at room temperature. With the addition of hydrogen, it becomes solid and suitable for making candles. The main difficulty is that most formulations are fairly soft and don’t always work well in applications such as making tapers.

On the positive side, it is a great wax to use for container candles. It holds scent and fragrance well. It is extremely clean burning – significantly more so than paraffin.

Beeswax

Beeswax is a classic, premium candle making wax. The wax comes from bee hives. Bees make the wax to form honeycombs to store honey. Beekeepers can harvest both the wax and the honey.

Beeswax produces minimal soot and burns smoothly and evenly. It is a firmer wax than soy candle wax so you can use it for tapers. Although it can hold fragrance, many people prefer not to add scent because they enjoy the mild, soft aroma of unscented beeswax.

The main problem with beeswax is its price. It has always been a premium wax. In the past, only the wealthy could afford beeswax. It’s more affordable these days, but still more expensive than most other candle waxes.

Where to Learn More

These waxes are the ones most candle makers use most of the time. You’d do just fine if these were the only ones you knew about.

However it’s well worth at least becoming aware of some of the other choices available. One place to start is the page: Candle Making Wax. You’ll discover some interesting waxes I haven’t mentioned here, as well as some more details about paraffin and soy wax.

Of course you need more than wax to make a candle. You can find out about the necessary equipment at: Candle Making Equipment

I want to recommend an excellent site for you to find out everything you need to know to start making beautiful handcrafted candles: The Candle Making Connection. I’ve learned the hard way that you can save a lot of time and frustration if you visit sites like that and get some insider tips and advice before you start experimenting on your own.

Making candles is a wonderful hobby and I hope this article helps you get started with.

Candle making has grown tremendously in the past few decades and this exponential growth has led to the further improvement in quality, availability and sheer diversity of wax, which as we all know, is one of the main ingredients of candle making. Wax is now made from a number of different materials, some from natural sources and others from manufactured materials.

One of the most abundantly manufactured wax used in making candles today is paraffin wax It is a by-product of petroluem. Most candles are now made from paraffin wax which is readily available everywhere and is cheap to buy. In various parts of the world, plant materials like soybeans and palm oil are extensively used also to make candle wax. Naturally produced wax are refined from such plant materials like soy beans and palm. United States is noted for massive production of soybeans from which natural soy wax is extracted. Soy wax has swiftly grown in popularity as it is commonly available, cheap to make, renewable and eco-friendly.

Another plant-based wax that is rapidly growing in popularity is Palm wax. Palm wax is a natural and renewable resource which is refined or extracted from palm trees. Acres of virgin forests in many countries around the world are now regularly being cleared to make way for palm tree plantations just because of the ever growing popularity of palm oil and palm wax in the world market.

This forest clearing has in many ways contributed to the global warming phenomenon affecting our planet today. it has displaced vast numbers of endangered species like tigers, rhinos, gorrillas and orangutans living in these forests. Try and keep in mind this negative effect on our planet when you are buying palm wax, and make your own little contribution towards the sustainance of our ecosystem by buying wax that is eco-friendly.

People have been making candles from animal products for centuries. The Egyptians made candles from beeswax as early as 3000 BC, and the Chinese made theirs from whale fat between 221 and 206 BC during the Qin Dynasty. Candles made from natural beeswax is available in white and yellow and it is as popular as ever. Although it is more expensive than paraffin wax or palm wax, candle makers are drawn to this wax by its natural fragrance and its burning characteristics.

A new kind of material people are using to make candles now is Gel. Gel candles are clear and have a rubbery texture but it works much the same way as candles made from any other kind of wax. Gel wax is available in three different densities – low, medium and high. The type of candle you want to make and the amount of scent you want to add will dictate the gel density you need to use. Low density gel works best for candles that contain 0-3% scent, and it is poured at low temperatures. Medium density gel is probably the most popular gel for making gel candles and it is best with candles that contain 3-5% of fragrance. High density gel wax works best for candles that holds a higher amount of fragrance and it is usually poured at much higher temperatures than the low and medium density wax.

Candle makers today are spoilt for choice with the wide varieties of wax available on the market for the candle making enthusiast. You can pick and choose the type of wax that works best for you and the type of candle you are planning to make. A complete understanding of the characteristics and quality of the different types of wax will allow every budding candle entrepreneur to use each one to its fullest potential in crafting the candle of their dreams.

Candle making has developed in different ways and at different times in various countries down the ages. In Egypt early in 3000 BC, candles were known to have been made from beeswax. During the Qin Dynasty between 221 and 206 BC, the Chinese started making candles from whale fat. Candles has been a favorite source of light for generations, illuminating family homes in its soft warm glow at night.

The popularity of candle making has grown over the ages. The candle making craft is now enjoyed by people of different origins, ages and backgrounds as a hobby and a lucrative way of making a living. Candle making has grown in popularity since its inception for various reasons. Some of these reasons can be attributed to a lot of people’s love for its warm soft glow, the ease at which it can be made by anyone and the readily available and inexpensive materials with which its made. People tend to enjoy candle making a lot better when they get together with family and fiends to create their candle master pieces. Others make their own candles to give to friends and lovers as gifts. There is also a growing army of people who consider candle making their business and make all types of candles to sell for financial gains. There is a growing number of people who now treat candle making as a business venture through which they can earn their daily bread.

Making your own candles to sell, give away as gifts or for your own personal use can be very rewarding. You can easily find all the materials and tools you will need to make all types of candles, like wax, wicks and molds in your local craft stores and also on the world wide web. Other materials like color, wick and fragrance can also be easily obtained in craft or hobbyist stores and online.

Preparing your chosen wax is the very first thing you need to do if you want to make candles. Melting the wax is usually done in a double boiler. The double boiler is simply one large pot filled with water and placed on a cooker or stove, inside of which you will place another smaller pot that contains the solid wax. This is what you will place on a stove or cooker fire to melt your wax. This way of melting wax was brought into being because exposing wax to direct heat can make it burn and turn yellow, therefore using the double boiler to melt it makes the task easier and safer.

After you’ve completed the task of melting the wax in your double boiler, the next thing to do is to hold the wick in place in the mold while you pour in the wax. Leave the wax to cool and set for about six hours before removing it from the mold. Although cooling it rapidly in the freezer will greatly reduce your waiting time before removing your finished candle from the mold, it may adversely affect the quality of your finished product. You will find it a lot easier to remove your candle from the mold if you first coat the inside of the mold with oil or non-stick cooking spray first before you pour the wax in.

You can easily make an endless variety of candles from the comfort of your own home considering the variety of different tools and materials available today from craft stores and other suppliers. You can even make your own molds using various materials, including latex, which will enable you to make your very own unique candles.
