I know, as model train hobbyists we are much more comfortable in our work rooms with our pliers than in front of a glowing computer screen. It just feels phony to be doing model training with a PC. Our dads didn’t have computers and we had great model trains without them. Stop acting like such a Luddite! You’ve already gotten lots of helpful information about model training on the internet. You know it’s one of the best ways to track down that vintage model train you remember from your youth. But I’ve been doing some research and there is some wonderful model train software out there as well. Here’s the finds:
Model Train Software to help map your track design:
One of the great products you can locate on the internet is the layout visualization and mapping software. lots of software programs allow you to visualize the spatial drawbacks of your play area and use them to mentally envision your layout in advance. Pre-set default track designs offer a solid starting point that with minor alterations can be made to fit the individual idiosyncrasies of your area. Some of the railroad track planning software is even in 3-D! If your ability to imagine is wanting this is an great aid.
Detailing your train in the computer age: Model Train Software for detailing, weathering and decalling:
Another really good bit of software is one of these programs that help you to print out and sometimes to even individualize the details for your locomotives and landscape. So if you want to make one of the buildings in your little town seem as if it made out of red bricks, you just print out a sheet of red bricks and then paste it onto the building to create the façade that you are looking for. If you want the lettering on your train to reflect a particular train you had in mind, you simply print the lettering in the style and size that you want and then decal it onto the train. The software allows you to change the sizes and to customize the styles so that they are unique to your needs. Pre-fab decal pages will go the way of the the Model T. It opens up far more options for you to individualize your model train empire.
Model Train Software will soon be able to help you with signaling:
One of the most intriguing developing stories in the model train field is the current effort to create a Java based computer controlled signaling system. An icon on your laptop could be the gateway right into the headquarters for your whole multi-train model train layout. This would take the mystery out of signaling for those that have never been able to fully grasp the more technical aspects of this part of model training. Imagine that. Your computer now changes into the control station for your entire model train empire. Signal box problems will become a thing of the past. It should make things easier for me.
I can tell that you actually see some redeemable features in your laptop. But keep an eye out for more innovations. There is no ignoring the important effects that virtually advances have had in the world| of real locomotives.
